Group Exhibition: Who the Flip is Karl Lagerfeld?

Bruno will be participating in the upcoming group exhibition Who the Flip is Karl Lagerfeld at Canteen.

Details:

Date: Thursday, April 2, 2009
Time: 7:00pm - 11:00pm
Location: Canteen (238 Dalhousie St., Ottawa)

Inspired by Emily Holton's imaginary portraits of the man himself, Who The Flip is Karl Lagerfeld?! called for artists to take some time to seriously ponder the celebrity enigma that is Karl. Artists chose to create literal portraiture of Karl, question the social phenomenon of his celebrity, discuss his debated genius and coveted design work, or simply expose the complete ridiculousness of a man who wears motorcycle gloves every day.

Featuring work from:

Emily Holton (Toronto)

Adam Begin (Ottawa)

Jade Chu (Toronto)

Antje Herzog (Germany)

Amanda Misko (Ottawa)

Bruno Souliere (Ottawa)

Tiffany Tse (Ottawa)

Simon Wukasch (Ottawa)

Artist statement:

Bruno Soulière's first experiences with art began as a child. His childhood dream was to be an astronaut, but when he realized that this dream might not be attainable, he decided to create the moon for himself using paint and canvas. The desire to create fantastical spaces has been a reoccurring theme throughout Bruno’s work as an artist.

With influences ranging from the Industrial Revolution to the works of Alfred Pellan, Matthew Barneys, and Mars One, Bruno’s work incorporates industrial materials like concrete, wood, wire, and pipes with traditional artistic media.

Inspired by backdrops from 1960s sci-fi films, Bruno most recent work invites the viewer to become part of the setting. Entitled Insta-Bar, this project centers on the concept of recreating the atmosphere of a social environment through the installation of an artificial space.

Using large-scale canvas mounted on carpentry to cover existing architecture, combined with food, drink, and a curated program of live music and performance art, Insta-Bar brings people together in a new, unconventional environment.

“Playing on the natural wanderlust of human nature, Insta-Bar creates a fantastical world within a comfortable, pre-existing setting. Entering the Insta-Bar is like arriving in a new country, where the sights, smells, and sounds are foreign, thus heightening the vistor’s experience,” says the artist.

See y'all there!

Bruno has been experimenting with aquariums as installation art. Have a look at the photos below for some of his prototypes.

The Ladies

In October 2007, Bruno held his first exhibition at La Petite Mort Gallery. Check out his artist statement below:

Bruno, a Gatineau-based artist, will hold a showing of his latest series: Relationships As A Life Form, November 16 2007, from 7 PM to 10 PM, at La Petite Mort Gallery.

The twelve beautifully ornamented paintings are an intimate series that place upon the faces of elderly women a sensuality that is usually associated with younger women.

The “little old ladies” are a symbol of the fragility and vulnerability that a person may suffer in a relationship that is ending, that moment when they feel most devoted. “What is fragile is beautiful,” declares the artist.

It is in this manner that Bruno seeks to shift from a selfish love, focused on a feeling of belonging to a single person, to a selfless love.

The Concrete Table

Bruno has been experimenting with concrete surfaces lately and built a table for our living room using a base made of barn wood and a table top made of concrete. He texturized and polished the top to create a unique finish. Have a look.

Little Big Show at Canteen

In October, Bruno participated in the pre-opening party at Canteen, the new gallery that opened on Dalhousie. He submitted two paintings for the Little Big Show, a fundraiser event for the Boys & Girls Club of Ottawa, and we're happy to report that both pieces sold, along with over 70 per cent of the works for sale that night.

The evening was a great success, and the gallery has become a fantastic addition to the North Dalhousie 'hood.

Other works for sale that night

Bruno will be showing a painting in the upcoming group exhibition paying homage to Karl Lagerfeld. Stay tuned for details.
